A day of happiness and sadness

 Today my 'baby' turns 8!
It seems like just days ago that I brought her home from the hospital.
She is getting to be a smart, pretty and wonderful young lady.
Happy Birthday my little blossom
I love you more each day!

She happens to share her birthday with her late sister.
Today would have been her 18th birthday.
So before the cake is cut and the balloons are blown up, I take a trip to the cemetery.
Instead of gifts I bring her flowers.
Instead of saying Happy Birthday I say I miss you.
Instead of cleaning up torn gift wrap, I wipe away the dirt and cobwebs from her stone.
I tell her I'll never forget her even though I hardly got to know her.
I wonder what she would be like as a young adult, just the way I wondered what she would have been like as a child.
And later,  after the candles are blown out and the cake is gone I think about her some more.
Then I give the ones I love a big hug.
Somehow that makes me feel a bit better.
Happy Birthday Girls

  1. Happy Birthday to your dear Ivy. What a pretty young lady she is already. The time goes by so quickly. Too quickly, doesn't it?

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your daughter, this must be such a bittersweet day for you. Sending a hug your way.

  3. I came to see your garden posts and instead found this, most touching and poignant post. Such a sad day for you but wonderful that it also has happiness. I can't even begin to imagine how you must feel each year. Best wishes.
