Winter still hanging on

Just when I thought that spring my finally be here, we got another 20 cm of fresh snow dumped on us! Even with the cold temperatures, things are melting. This ditch as been flowing for a few weeks now, the thick layer of snow keeping it from freezing again.
Country Boy had a follow up at the fracture clinic on Thursday.
The Doctor was pleased with the latest x-ray, and we have another appointment in 2 weeks.
He seems to be getting along not bad with the use of only one arm. Mom still has to help with washing his hair and spreading peanut butter. LOL
I am getting impatient for spring. There has been snow covering the yard since the 24th of November! I want to play in the dirt!
In the mean time, spring cleaning has begun.
When spring finally gets here, I am going to be ready

A dose of spring - Canada Blooms!

On Sunday, Little Country Girl and I went to Canada Blooms!
I think everyone is a little cranky this year because winter just wont go away.
For those of you that have never been, or don't know what Canada blooms is all about, it is a Garden show in Toronto's Direct Energy Center. It is Canada's biggest garden show in Canada's biggest convention center. It has over a million square feet of space! Canada Blooms shares this huge space with the Toronto Home Show. Admission to either show gets you in to both shows.
Canada Blooms has the Toronto Flower Show, as well as Feature Gardens, Exhibits, Vendors, Workshops, 3 stages for speakers, as well as a kids play area.
The show was packed... people are itching for spring!
I took almost 400 photos at the show, but I will only share my favorite ones here today.
This is the first planting we saw as we entered the building
The theme of this years show is "Wild"
The first section we looked at was the Toronto Flower Show. There were so many great entries, but I am only posting a few of my favorites. Class 37 was "Free Wheeling" - a wheel barrow full of compatible rooted plant material. Here are the 3 best
"A Walk on the Wild Side" was next. Anything goes, plants must predominate.
We thought this Carousel was amazing, even though it didn't win 1st prize

This one was the winner
A few entries from various classes

There were several feature gardens too.
I took so many photos of them, they were all fabulous!
Here are some favorites, in no particular order

A little silliness too... here's Little Country Girl all grown up!
We had a great day, and forgot about winter for a while.
If you are in the Toronto area, the show runs until March 23rd.

Subtle signs of spring

One sunny day this week, I saw a Robin.
This may not seem like a big deal to most people, but to me it is always the first sign of spring.
And while my gardens are still under at least 18 inches of snow, that sighting gives me hope that spring may actually be on its way. This morning there was a lonely Red Winged Blackbird outside my bedroom window. Another sign of spring!
Just now I looked out that same window only to discover a blizzard out there!
Temperatures are expected to drop to -16°C overnight.
Spring isn't coming any time soon, but tomorrow I am going TO spring.
Tomorrow is our trip to Canada Blooms!
And I can't wait!
:)

March Break excitement

March came in like a lion.
This will forever be remembered as the winter that didn't want to go away!
There were some nice sunny days, but it was still unseasonably cold.

Last Friday was the first day of March Break here for the kids. School resumes on March 17th.
It is always hard to keep the kids amused for the entire week, so when Country Boy asked if he could go snowboarding with some friends I was happy he was actually doing something other then lay around and play video games. I was watching TV after dinner and at about 8 o'clock the phone rang.
Country Boy had fallen at the hill and hurt his arm. His friend was going to take him for x-rays.
I found his health card and met them at the hospital. Sure enough, his arm was broken!
A few hours later we were ready to go home,  Country Boy sporting a lovely plaster cast.
For Country Boy, the rest of the March break would be spent with an elevated arm.
6-8 weeks ahead in a cast!
Thankfully, Little Country Girl would be easily entertained with a shopping trip, a lunch at McDonalds and lots of skating practice.
On Monday, Little Country Girl will be going tubing with her class at a local hill.
Fingers crossed she comes home in one piece!

Good riddence to February!

February is gone, but cold weather is lingering.
Snow sqaulls caused a 96 car pileup on Hwy 400 last week.
The cold is relentless this year, the snow keeps falling.
People are getting cranky.
This morning there was a -30°C windchill.
The long range forecast holds little hope until at least mid March.
Fridays high of -2°C sounds like a walk in the park after recent temperatures, but still below 'seasonal temperatures'.  Temperatures falling again to below 'normal' after that.
Not sure how much more winter this country girl can take!
